How To Get Out of Jail, Free!

This workshop will share the results of an initiative taken to introduce motivated inmates to Smart for Life processes that strengthen thinking and decision-making skills, leading to greater success for inmates in transitioning to more productive futures.

In a pilot study, a small number of inmates in Winnipeg's Remand Centre were introduced to OneSmartWorld's suite of personal development tools. Through a series of one-to-one meetings, a volunteer coach showed participating inmates how to use these tools to improve their thinking skills and to plan for their future. Feedback from these inmates confirms that this approach can accelerate learning and better prepare inmates for a successful transition to their preferred future.

These processes are easily taught, and can be introduced to motivated, literate inmates, gang members, troubled youth and others who are seeking to make a better future for themselves. With training, this approach can be used by volunteers and professionals in a low-cost, efficient intervention that will increase inmate success, reduce re-offending and cut the cost of re-incarceration.

Benefits to Participating Inmates:

  • awareness of how they prefer to use their intelligence in daily life ("I know how I am smart")
  • adoption of a personal development process ("I can expand my range of thinking strategies")
  • practice at strengthening their use of intelligence in managing day to day life. ("I can learn to think better and make smarter decisions!")
  • develop a plan for using their intelligence to support a successful transition to their preferred future life

Who Should Come?

  • Leaders in Manitoba’s corrections system
  • Probation officers, counsellors, volunteer coordinators, chaplains
  • Anyone interested in a new solution to break the cycle of crime and gang involvement.
